Amarone Meent 72a, Rotterdam, phone: 010 4148487 |

Amarone is situated in the centre of Rotterdam. Amarone is light and open, but at the same time exudes warmth. Mirrors and large windows give a spacious feeling. The open kitchen, the open fireplace, the luxurious armchairs and long couches make Amarone a warm and attractive place to be.
The 'walk-in', climate-controlled, wine cellar containing more than 250 types of wine that covers the entire rear wall is very impressive. The wine list is striking, not just with respect to choice, but also because of the affordable prices that Amarone charges for its house wines.
Amarone's cuisine is French-Mediterranean, with the emphasis on the French. Chef Gert Blom has a light approach to cooking. His "signatures", such as thinly pared coquilles with hazelnut, truffle and whisked pecorino or "Fricassee of veal sweetbread with a PX sauce" show most clearly his classical training and light approach to cooking. |

Food: 9 | Service: 7 | Decor: 9 Not bad, could be better. The wine list is ok, the mark up is reasonable. Most sommeliers are lacking, what do you expect? The service is generally good but sometimes falls short. Food is second best in Rotterdam. Will go back. |

I went there having quite high expectations. After all, it's one of the few Michelin star restaurants in The Netherlands. The first thing that hit me when I arrived was the platter of pretzels on the table. Pretzels are something one expects to see on a pub table, not on a Michelin star restaurant. All right, maybe that was just a silly mistake. But then there was the KLM air hostess distributing bread buns from a big tray she was holding in her hands. She was walking around distributing bread buns, which by the way were as hard as stones and looked like the local bakery's left overs. Rick Stein, Gordon Ramsay, Gary Rhodes, guys, what's wrong in this picture?????
I am sorry, is this what a Michelin restaurant is supposed to be? Maybe I just got it all wrong, but somehow I thought the KLM air hostess did not belong there. The food was good, and the venison probably one of the best I have ever had, but the desserts were so boring I could scream. Th chef got it wrong: I would have expected the mango in my dessert to be real, Indian/Pakistani mango, not the trivial, supermarket Israeli mango, but that's what I got. And I have to say it did not stand up to the overwhelming vanilla taste.
Moreover, the somellier didn't have a clue. I asked for his opinion as I had to choose between a French wine and Amarone della Valpolicella. He clearly was way out of his depth, and ended up recommending Amarone because the restarurant's name is... Amarone. Pretty shabby. What the sad little fellow didn't know is that Amarone is my favourite wine and so I have quite some knowledge about it, however the variety he recommended missed the characteristic dark chocolate flavour, which is unforgivable.
Overall: pretentious place lacking in basic knowledge and skills. Way overrated for what it offers. I would not recommend it, as it's a waste of time and money. Moreover, for an experience you won't forget it's worth walking just 100 meters don the road and visiting Quote. Let go and trust the chef - whose name I don't even know - and go for Quote's surprise menu. It's total bliss - and you don't pay exceedingly ridiculous amounts to educate some sad little fellow who calls himself a somellier. |
