L’altro Mastai is a dream, ”another dream” come true; it is a place where one can bask in the Mediterranean sunshine rediscovering flavours and fragrances. After reconstruction and decoration work that took 3 years to complete, the restaurant, which has a staff of over 20 people and is situated in the very heart of Rome’s historical centre, opened on September 25, 2003. In November 2005 L’Altro Mastai received a Michelin star.

In designing and setting up the spaces, special attention was dedicated to the details: the interior decorators firm “Vivai del Sud”, entrusted with the project, created an ambience where classical elements such as arches, mosaics and vaults all blend together, and where rounded lines welcome guests with a sense of flowing continuity.

The rich colours, the vivid spots of orange, yellow, brown, ochre and red which illuminate the walls hung with abstract paintings, are also the tones that characterize chef Baldassarre’s cuisine.

I went here with family for a special evening, and we were underwhelmed. I had foie gras to start and calf sweetbreads to follow, which were both very tasty, but I left hungry and aware that most of the flavours used had passed me by. There was far too much going on on each small plate. Someone else had the sole, which again was very good, but TINY! Another had the steak, which was however just about a reasonable size. We decided that we would have an ice-cream at a Giolitti's instead of pudding because dinner was taking so long and we were still all fairly hungry after two courses. The service was too perfect, and fussy, so that we felt less inclined to enjoy the food than we might otherwise have been. Really excellent food, but the real and valid complaint was that there was not enough to eat. We should have gone to Trattoria, which is easier going, more straight forward, and more filling!

Excellent food. The only thing to improve is personnel attitude. They could be more friendly and service oriented.
