Catharina's is in a beautiful space and the decor is lovely. However, the service did not live up to my expectations. We waited 20min for our plates to be cleared after starters and our waitress practically ignored us throughout the mains and dessert. The most peculiar thing was that I was served an espresso in a normal sized cup, as though I'm an idiot who wouldn't know better. While the food was on par, not quite the fine dining "experience" I expected.

The food was good but there is room for improvement service wise. The restaurant was relatively empty but the setting is simply stunning.

My boyfriend and I were somewhat disappointed with our experience at Catharina's. The service wasn't great - after we were seated and got our water and bread, we were ignored for next half an hour. When we eventually ordered our meals, the food took ages to arrive. The food itself wasn't too bad (we both had the dining week set menu), but not brilliant. The risotto starter was overseasoned, and the gnocchi main was extremely rich. The menu could have done with a lighter vegetarian option. The beef carpaccio starter and steak main were very good though. The place itself is lovely, as is the setting. It's a pity we didn't enjoy it as much as we thought we would, and probably won't recommend it to others.

My husband and I were both really disappointed with the set menu. It seemed unexciting and it was my impression that not much thought went into the planning of the menu, i.e. a heavy vegetarian starter with a heavy vegetarian main, a red meat starter with a red meat main. I enjoyed the excellent red meat starter even though I'm not a red meat fan, and enjoyed the first few bites of the heavy vegetarian main. My husband chose his 3 courses from the a'la carte menu, which he enjoyed. It was interesting to note that his meal totalled up to a mere R25 more than the set menu. We expected wine pairings with each dish on the set menu, so, again, it was disappointing that nothing was suggested to the effect. The service was excellent and it was great to be able to take a longish walk back to our car, taking in the view surrounding the estate. However, we both agreed that Catharina's would not be a restaurant of choice for us.
