“Boo-hoo you found a burnt match in your meal… so what?” Having just visited the Oceano ‘restaurant’ on Borneo Island, and at the request of the supervisor/proprietor, I feel compelled to right a full review of both the food and the service. My brother ordered the Seafood linguini while I had spinach and truffle gnocchi. After a few mouthfuls of the linguini my brother discovered a burnt match in amongst the pasta while my spinach Gnocchi had a stray slither of salmon in it. I discreetly raised these issues with the waiting staff and was offered an apology and the explanation that they “we don’t use matches in the kitchen” (which begs the question where did the match come from, an ashtray?). Following this explanation and questioning the hygienic standards of the kitchen I politely notified the staff that we had lost our appetites and would not be paying for the meal. However, upon leaving the restaurant, the supervisor/proprietor aggressively squared up to me demanding that I pay for the meal in full. I re-explained what had happened and why I would not be paying for the meal to which he offered the following sentiment: “boo -hoo you found burnt match in your meal, so what?” After a short exchange of words in which the supervisor/proprietor continued to explain that he couldn’t “care less what we found in our food”, before finally accusing us of contaminating the food ourselves, he encouraged me to write a review on whatever site I liked because he basically ‘he couldn’t care less what people thought about his kitchen’… an interesting business model for a restaurant I’m sure you would agree. So this review is for you sir – you certainly offer a unique dining experience that will undoubtedly attract a very niche clientele.
